I just don't understand it. How is it that a habit - whatever it is - can be fine for some people to do; and so annoying from others that you want to yank your fingernails out by the root and shove them in your eyes? Take breathing, for example. Now this is an essential function to maintain life. I realize that. I have even been known to do it myself at times. But there is this person I know who does it in such an annoying way!! Another example is laughing. Now, what's wrong with laughing you say? Nothing. Usually. But there is this person I know who does it inappropriately. How can a laugh be inappropriate? Trust me, it can be. Like at the end of EVERY SENTENCE!
A pet peeve, by definition, is a minor annoyance that can instill extreme frustration in an individual (no shit). Typically each person has several pet peeves that aggravate him or her more than the average person. Another person may not react as negatively or at all to the same circumstance.
The term originated from the word 'peeve.' A 'peeve,' meaning something that is particularly irritating or annoying, is a relatively recent word. Its first printed usage was in 1911. The term is a back formation from a 14th-century word: 'peevish,' meaning ornery or ill-tempered.
The phrase 'pet peeve,' a uniquely personal irritant, first appeared in print in 1919, so obviously people have been laughing and breathing since way back then. Oh, and clearing their throats.
You see, my problem is that some people can breathe and laugh and it won't bother me at all; but there are some others (one) who do this and it drives me batty! Why is this?
I have to go or I'll sit here all day and rant.
chat soon.
xoxo
