Utopia

Philosophy class - Paper #2 - I was given a deserted island off the coast of New Zealand, and 20,000 people and was charged with creating my own Utopia. Here is my creation:

Mytopia

To a beautiful island, off the New Zealand coast;
I arrive with my posse, to assume my post.
Queen of the land, an auspicious title;
I won’t take it lightly, as my position is vital.

Politics are not my most favorite deed;
But the installation of government fulfills a direct need.
Assemblywomen, councilmen, mayors and clerks;
People in power, who were once known as jerks.

Segregation is a must, to all know our place;
It is not done by gender, age, weight, or race.
Each one drew a straw, to know where to go;
The classes are Upper, the Middle, and Low.

Our homes will be built;
Some do it themselves.
Not me, of course;
(Mine was built by the elves.)

We are given supplies, to meet all our needs;
Furniture, clothing and food, to prevent stampedes.
Our families intact, to our homes we will settle;
Make the beds, set the table, put on the kettle.

A list of jobs to assign, some requiring skill;
Others just need a warm body to fill.
Doctor, librarian, garbage man and maid;
Dentist, nurse, mailman and a teacher for each grade.

Entertainment is fundamental for society’s bliss;
Some like sports, some the arts, some to just reminisce.
We’ll need a place to enjoy our chosen event;
So we will build an arena and a park with a tent.

I love to shop, so we’ll build a great mall;
With Filenes, and Sears, and Aeropostale.
Victoria’s Secret and Forever 21;
Spencer’s, and Starbucks, and a place to buy gum.

Mytopians dwell in complete content;
No worries about taxes, mortgage or rent.
Economy flourishes; we buy what we need;
There is no debt, no credit, and even no greed.

All wages united into one great pool;
To be distributed to all citizens, genius or fool.
Some need more than others, as class represents;
Never in the red, hardly making a dent.

The kids go to school, the educational technique;
Allows for self-direction, it’s very unique.
Each finds his own way, moving ahead as he’s ready;
A method that is interesting, affirmative and steady.

They all play together, the toys are all shared;
Teams are assigned, never chosen, so feelings are spared.
Learning through play, helps the world to make sense;
Keeping students relaxed, eager, and not ever tense.

Hospitals run without intrusion of an HMO;
You need to be seen? All you do is go.
No co-pays or deductibles ever to be met;
You go with complaints, and treatment you get.
Mind you, there may be a bit of a wait;
But there is relaxing music, for your psychological state.

Running out of time is never in question;
There is no anxiety, confusion or depression.
All citizens have enough time to get their stuff done;
With plenty left over for family fun!

There is no poverty, suffering or loss;
We all have enough, the worker, the boss.
Citizens without anger, grief or fear.
We all are so happy to be living here!

In conclusion:
There once was a Mytopian Queen;
Whose island was simply serene,
She looked over her land,
Saying, “This is so grand!”
I can’t believe it all was a dream.
